If you are reading this webpage you are connected to the Internet.
Regardless of how you are connected to the Internet you will be making use of a Firewall, perhaps it is running on your PC, or maybe it is running on a router. The fact is your Firewall is the primary device that protects your network from the Internet, once traffic comes across your Firewall you then need to rely on your antivirus solution.
The reality is the majority of Firewalls and antivirus for that matter that most organisations use are not capable of protecting your network from Internet threats. A modern Firewall, provided it is configured correctly will be able to identify and block known Internet threats, such as Viruses, Malware and Spyware.
If you are unsure what type of Firewall you have we can execute a simple download of the EICAR test signatures:
If you saw a message in your web browser saying this file was blocked for Test 1 and 2, you have a well configured modern Firewall. If your antivirus software blocked both files you most likely have a legacy SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) Firewall. If the Test 1 only was blocked by your Firewall, good news, you have a reasonably well configured Firewall, although this could be improved.
This is a simple way for us to demonstrate how bad software can enter your network. If you can implement a Firewall you have another layer of protection for all of your networked resources. This means you don’t rely solely on your antivirus or other security applications to protect your network resources.
Next Generation Firewalls provide the functionality to protect your network from Viruses, Malware and Spyware. They also protect your network services from known Threats with their intrusion detection and privation capabilities. Most importantly they have the ability to identify and control applications and the websites your users can visit.
